Short term success -- but concerns and long term work ahead!

Swimmers in recent days have reported continued beautiful clarity but some worrisome green dots and globules extending into open water.

Cyanobacteria are not really algae, but photosynthetic bacteria that can produce their own oxygen, so they can hide in deep water and float up to the surface when decaying plants and algae release phosphorus. That’s why they are evanescent, and why we know that permanent solutions also involve filtration of deep waters to remove significant amounts of both phosphorus and nitrogen from the lake and aquifer.

We celebrate this summer’s remarkable success. Perhaps next year we might be able to organize a second, last summer clean up to keep Fresh Pond Fresh throughout the whole recreational season. Your contribution can help.
