The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation awarded a $260,000 grant to Shelter Island to implement Fresh Pond’s deep water filtration pilot project.

We must now help raise up to $65,000 in required matching funds. We are deeply grateful for your contributions. Please consider a generous, tax-deductible donation, below.

Our beautiful Pond is impacted by periodic algae blooms due to excess phosphorus and nitrogen in our groundwater and sediments.

While we continue to monitor water quality via the Citizen’s Statewide Lake Assessment Project and work with the town to implement a permanent solution, the Fresh Pond Neighbors Association, with approvals from both the Town and the Department of Environmental Conservation funds annual professional clean-up, removing harmful algae blooms and decaying plants leaves and stems that feed these blooms. Our goal is to keep the pond safe and beautiful for Shelter Islanders and visitors to enjoy and to preserve healthy habitat for birds, fish, turtles and humans.

We budget $10,000 - $15,000 annually for this annual clean up.

Thanks to supporters like you, our first annual 2024 clean-up was completed on July 16th and 17th. The pond responded: our monitored water clarity increased, remarkably, to a depth of 10 feet and stayed there through most of the summer! We know we must keep up these efforts until we have permanent water quality solutions in place.

We need your continued help and support!

The Fresh Pond Neighbors Association is a 501(C)3 non profit and your donations are tax deductible.
